In his book, Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman states that there are four domains of emotional intelligence that a leader should focus on developing. Here are the four skills that a leader should develop for dealing with crises.

Self-Control

Self-control is all about controlling your feelings and being in control of the amygdala, instead of the other way around. By exercising self-control, you will be able to train your brain to improve the response from your prefrontal cortex to control your amygdala. By exercising self-control, you will become a more effective and more emotionally balanced leader.

Relationship Management

Managing your relationships in times of crisis is one of the most important ways by which leaders differentiate themselves. Relationship management is important because it ensures ongoing teamwork and minimizes the chances of conflicts. Developing relationship management skills is not easy and will require you to work closely with every member of your team.

Social Awareness

Dealing with people who are upset or worried is not easy. It requires you to have acute social awareness and be empathetic to the needs of others. People are bound to be upset in times of a crisis, and a true leader is able to understand where certain emotions are coming from and are able to adapt accordingly. Having social awareness skills can help a leader understand exactly what’s bothering other team members, and they can play an important role in managing the needs of others and correcting the problem.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is about being conscious about your own feelings and thoughts. When you know exactly where you are mentally, you will always act rationally. Thoughtful awareness of your emotions and feelings can help you remain calm and collected in times of distress, and this can help you navigate different kinds of crises without losing control of your own feelings and thoughts.
